Lake Bovilla – A Turquoise Gem near Tirana

Lake Bovilla is one of the most beautiful natural attractions near Tirana and has become a very popular destination for day trips in recent years. Its turquoise water, surrounded by mountains, dramatic cliffs and the famous viewpoint above the lake create a completely different atmosphere from the coast around Durrës and Golem.

How to get to Lake Bovilla

The best option is to travel by car or hire a vehicle. The route takes you through Durrës and Tirana before continuing into the mountains towards Lake Bovilla. Most of the journey is straightforward, although the final section is narrower and the road surface is poorer in places. However, a standard car can usually manage the journey without difficulty.

It is best to set off early in the morning, especially during the summer. The journey is more pleasant, the temperature is cooler and there are usually fewer people at the viewpoint. It is an ideal way to discover the mountainous side of Albania during your holiday.

From the car park, a short uphill walk takes approximately 15 to 25 minutes. The path is rocky, so we recommend wearing sturdy footwear. The view is certainly worth the effort. The entire lake opens up below you, nestled between the mountains, and on sunny days the water has a beautiful turquoise colour.

Can you swim in the lake?

Lake Bovilla serves as a drinking water reservoir for Tirana, so swimming is not officially recommended. Most visitors come here to enjoy the natural surroundings, beautiful views and a short hike.

After rain, both the road and the path to the viewpoint can be slippery, so extra care is advised.

Practical tips

Mobile phone reception may be weaker in some places, but Google Maps usually provides reliable directions. It can often be windy at the viewpoint, even on hot days, so it is worth bringing a lightweight sweatshirt or shirt.
