Bunk’Art 1 in Tirana
Bunk'Art 1 is no ordinary museum. It is an authentic underground city filled with long concrete corridors, heavy iron doors and rooms designed to protect the highest-ranking officials of the communist regime in the event of a nuclear war.
A Mysterious Underground City
When people think of Albania, most picture the sea, beaches and sunny promenades. Few realise that one of the country's most unique attractions lies hidden near the centre of Tirana – a vast secret bunker built deep underground during the Cold War.
A Place That Remained Secret for Many Years
The complex was built during the rule of dictator Enver Hoxha, when Albania was one of the most isolated countries in the world. The regime lived in constant fear of an attack and ordered thousands of bunkers to be constructed throughout the country.
Bunk'Art 1, however, was completely different.
It was not a small concrete shelter but a vast nuclear bunker complex hidden inside a mountain on the outskirts of Tirana. It contains dozens of rooms, command centres, living quarters, secret communication rooms and corridors that now have an almost cinematic atmosphere.
As soon as you pass through the heavy iron doors and descend underground, the outside world seems to disappear for a while.
An Atmosphere You Will Not Find in an Ordinary Museum
Inside the bunker, there is an unusual sense of silence, cold and tension. Dim lighting, original equipment and seemingly endless concrete corridors create a powerful experience unlike a traditional museum visit.

A Day Trip from Golem? Definitely
A visit to Bunk'Art 1 is an ideal day trip away from the beach when staying at our apartment in Golem. The drive to Tirana takes approximately 45–60 minutes, depending on traffic.
You can easily combine your visit to Bunk'Art 1 with a ride on the Dajti Express cable car and a trip up Mount Dajti, which offers magnificent views across Tirana and the surrounding countryside.
