Why Visit Divjakë–Karavasta National Park?
The park covers more than 22,000 hectares and protects a diverse landscape of lagoons, wetlands, pine forests, sand dunes, beaches and salt marshes. At its heart lies Karavasta Lagoon, covering approximately 42 km². It is the largest lagoon in Albania and one of the largest on the eastern Adriatic coast.
The area is included on the Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance and is home to more than 200 species of birds. The symbol of the park is the rare Dalmatian pelican, but you may also spot herons, cormorants, flamingos and other waterbirds and migratory species.
Wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed. Your best chance of seeing birds is early in the morning or later in the afternoon, and bringing your own binoculars is recommended.
Driving from Golem to Divjakë–Karavasta
The journey from Golem takes approximately one hour by car and covers around 55–60 kilometres, depending on the route and your destination within the park. During the high season, traffic in Golem and along the coastal road may make the journey longer.
From Golem, drive towards Kavajë and continue south along the main SH4 road. Then turn towards Cermë and Divjakë. We recommend entering "Divjakë-Karavasta National Park Visitor Center" or "Kulla 360°" into your navigation app rather than simply searching for the town of Divjakë. The visitor centre and observation tower are located beyond the town, towards the lagoon and beach.
If you would like to enjoy a walk, we recommend parking near the restaurant and boat rental. From there, you can follow the wooden walkways through the pine forest to the Kulla 360° observation tower. The route is pleasant and not demanding.
The main attractions are accessible by a standard passenger car. Before setting off, download the route for offline use and do not drive onto unpaved side roads within the protected area without permission.
Fresh Fruit and Vegetables Directly from Local Farmers
The area around Divjakë is predominantly agricultural. On your way back to Golem, you may come across small roadside stalls where local farmers sell fresh fruit and vegetables directly from their fields.
Watermelons, tomatoes, peppers, pumpkins and other seasonal produce can often be purchased here for a fraction of the prices charged in supermarkets. Most of the produce is freshly harvested, perfectly ripe and full of flavour.
We recommend carrying some cash in Albanian lek and stopping at one of the stalls on your return journey.

What to See and Do in the Park
1. Visitor Centre
Your first stop should be the visitor centre near the lagoon. Here, you can learn about the local landscape, protected wildlife and the importance of the wetlands. The park's best-known viewpoint, Kulla 360°, is also located in this area.
The centre's opening hours, boat trip availability and possible entrance fees may vary throughout the year. Check the latest information locally, especially outside the main tourist season.
2. Kulla 360° Observation Tower
The park's main attraction is the modern, 36-metre-high Kulla 360° observation tower. Its upper platform offers panoramic views of Karavasta Lagoon, the pine forest canopy, the coastline and the Adriatic Sea. From here, you can truly appreciate the size and diversity of the national park.
The climb to the observation tower is easy and safe. It follows wide concrete stairs inside an enclosed structure. If you are visiting with young children, please note that pushchairs must be left at the bottom.
3. Karavasta Lagoon and Birdwatching
The lagoon's calm waters, small islands, reed beds and narrow channels create one of Albania's most valuable natural areas. Walk quietly, remain on the marked trails and respect any temporary closures within the park. Do not feed the birds or approach their nesting sites.
You can also explore the lagoon by small boat and see its waterways, surrounding nature and birdlife from a completely different perspective. Boat trips can usually be arranged on site, depending on the weather and current availability.
4. Walking or Cycling Through the Pine Forest
The coastal pine forest at Divjakë is the only natural forest of its kind on the Albanian coast. A network of paths runs through the forest and is suitable for easy walks and cycling. In summer, the trees provide welcome shade and a more peaceful environment than the open beach.
You do not need to plan a long hike. Even a short walk among the tall pine trees is an enjoyable addition to the trip and can easily be combined with a visit to the observation tower and lagoon.
5. Divjakë Beach
The national park includes approximately 15 kilometres of coastline, with fine sand and a gently sloping entrance into the sea. Divjakë Beach lies next to the pine forest, allowing you to walk from the shade of the trees to the sea in just a few minutes.
During summer, it is a lovely place to end your trip with a swim, a walk along the shore or some time relaxing by the water.
The beach has a more natural character than the busier parts of Golem. Bring drinking water, sun protection and anything else you may need for your time by the sea. Some services may be closed outside the main season.
6. Lunch Featuring Fresh Fish and Seafood
Divjakë has a strong fishing tradition, and local restaurants mainly serve fresh fish, seafood and simple Albanian dishes. Before ordering a whole fish, ask whether the price is listed per portion or per kilogram.
If you are travelling with children, you can usually also find pasta, grilled meat, chips or salad on the menu.
Recommended Itinerary for a Day Trip
8:30 a.m. – Departure from Golem
9:30–10:00 a.m. – Arrival at the visitor centre
10:00 a.m. – Climb to the top of the Kulla 360° observation tower
11:00 a.m. – Walk by the lagoon and birdwatching
12:30 p.m. – Lunch in Divjakë or near the park
2:00 p.m. – Walk through the pine forest
3:00 p.m. – Beach and swimming, weather permitting
5:00–6:00 p.m. – Return to Golem
If you do not wish to spend time at the beach, you can shorten the itinerary to approximately half a day. If you add a boat trip on the lagoon, a longer walk and swimming, allow a full day for the excursion.
Other Places to Visit Nearby
Bashtovë Fortress
The medieval Bashtovë Fortress stands in the flat countryside near the Shkumbin River, approximately 16 kilometres from the national park. Its location outside a town and its well-preserved walls and towers make it particularly interesting.
You can add it as a separate stop during your journey, but check the current route, the condition of the access road and the additional travel time beforehand.
Ardenica Monastery
If you are interested in history as well as nature, you can extend your trip to Ardenica Monastery. This Orthodox monastery was founded in the 13th century and is known for its Byzantine architecture, frescoes and views of the surrounding countryside.
It lies further south of Divjakë, making it better suited to a full-day itinerary with an early departure from Golem.
For families with younger children, we recommend choosing either the park and beach or the park and one cultural stop. Trying to combine the observation tower, a boat trip, the beach, the fortress and the monastery in a single day would mean spending most of the day rushing.
Practical Tips Before Your Trip
Set off early, especially in July and August.
Bring drinking water, sunscreen, a hat and insect repellent.
Sturdy footwear, binoculars and a camera are also useful.
Pack swimwear and a towel if you plan to swim.
Do not rely on seeing pelicans at close range.
Do not leave any litter behind and remain on permitted paths.
Check opening hours, admission fees and boat trip availability before departure or on arrival.

Is the Trip Suitable for Children?
Yes. The journey is not too long, and the itinerary can easily be adapted to suit the children's ages. Younger children will usually enjoy the observation tower, birds, forest and the opportunity to finish the day at the beach.
During summer, avoid long walks in the hottest part of the day. Keep children under close supervision near the observation tower, water and wooden walkways.
