Durrës Amphitheatre: A Day Trip from Golem into Roman History

The Largest Roman Amphitheatre in the Balkans
The Amphitheatre of Durrës was built at the beginning of the 2nd century AD, during the reign of Emperor Trajan. At the height of its importance, it could accommodate approximately 15,000 to 20,000 spectators and hosted gladiatorial contests, public performances and other major events.
At that time, Durrës was known as Dyrrachium and was one of the most important ports of the Roman Empire on the Adriatic coast. The impressive size of the amphitheatre is a reminder of just how important and prosperous the city was almost two thousand years ago.
A Monument Hidden Beneath the City
One of the most fascinating facts about the amphitheatre is that it remained almost completely forgotten for many centuries. Over time, it was buried beneath layers of soil, and residential buildings were constructed above parts of it.
It was not rediscovered until 1966, when Albanian archaeologist Vangjel Toçi uncovered the site. Subsequent archaeological excavations revealed part of the seating area, passageways and underground chambers once used by gladiators and performers.
The entire site has still not been excavated. Some sections remain beneath the surrounding buildings, creating an extraordinary connection between the city's ancient history and everyday modern life.
A Christian Chapel and Rare Mosaics
After gladiatorial contests came to an end, the amphitheatre took on a new purpose. A small early Christian chapel was established within its interior and decorated with mosaics and wall paintings.
This remarkable combination of a Roman arena and a later Christian sanctuary makes the amphitheatre an especially fascinating place to visit. During a single tour, you can discover several distinct periods in the history of Durrës.
How to Travel from Golem to Durrës by Bus
The easiest and most affordable option is the local bus marked Durrës–Golem. Buses stop along the main road in Golem and usually run approximately every 30 minutes during the day.
A one-way journey costs 100 ALL per person. There is no need to buy a ticket in advance—you simply pay in cash on board. We recommend having some small-denomination Albanian lek ready.
The journey to the centre of Durrës usually takes around 35–40 minutes, depending on traffic. From the final stop, the amphitheatre is within easy walking distance.

What to Visit Near the Amphitheatre
Allow approximately 45–60 minutes to explore the amphitheatre itself. Afterwards, you can continue on foot to several other interesting places in the centre of Durrës.

The amphitheatre is located in the historic centre of Durrës, just a few minutes' walk from the sea. Admission is generally inexpensive, usually around 300 ALL per person, and discounted tickets may be available for children and seniors. Tickets are normally purchased at the entrance, and advance booking is usually not required. Opening hours may vary depending on the season, public holidays or ongoing archaeological work.
During the summer months, it is best to visit in the morning before the temperature becomes too high. Comfortable footwear, drinking water, a hat and sun protection are recommended.
An Easy Trip Without a Car
A visit to the Roman Amphitheatre is ideal for a half-day or full-day trip from Golem. You do not need to rent a car or book an organised tour—simply take the local bus and you will soon find yourself in one of Albania's most historically fascinating cities.
