Are you planning a holiday in Albania and wondering which month is the best time to visit? The weather in Albania varies depending on the region. While the mountains can be cooler even during summer, the Adriatic coast enjoys long, warm and sunny summers. The popular resort of Golem, near Durrës, usually offers pleasant conditions for swimming from June until the end of September. Each part of the season has its own advantages.

When is the best time to visit Albania for a seaside holiday?

If swimming and truly summery weather are your priorities, the best time to visit Golem is from June to September. July and August are the warmest and liveliest months. June and September are generally quieter while still offering plenty of sunshine and pleasant temperatures.

The ideal time depends mainly on what you expect from your holiday:

  • June – warm days, the beginning of the swimming season and fewer tourists,

  • July and August – the highest temperatures, the warmest sea and a lively holiday atmosphere,

  • September – warm sea, more comfortable temperatures and quieter beaches, while the tourist season is still ongoing,

  • April, May and October – better suited to trips, walks and exploring Albania,

  • November to March – some days may be cold and rainy, while others are pleasantly sunny and warm enough for a walk by the sea in just a sweatshirt.

Albania in June: the beginning of summer without the biggest crowds

June is a good choice for visitors who want warm weather but prefer to avoid the hottest summer temperatures. The days are long, restaurants and beach businesses are already open, and the resort gradually comes to life for the main season. The sea is usually suitable for swimming, with the long-term average water temperature near Golem reaching around 23°C.

June is ideal for couples, families with young children and anyone who wants to combine time on the beach with trips to Durrës, Tirana, Berat or Lake Bovilla.

July and August: peak season and the warmest sea

July and August are the main holiday season in Golem. Daytime temperatures often reach 30°C or more, so it is best to spend the hottest part of the day in the shade or in an air-conditioned apartment. The sea is very pleasant, with an average temperature of approximately 25–26°C in August.

Golem is at its liveliest during these months. The beaches, promenade, restaurants and stalls are busy from morning until late in the evening. If you plan to travel in July or August, it is worth booking your accommodation and flights well in advance.

Albania in September: warm sea and a quieter holiday

September is one of the most pleasant months for a seaside holiday in Albania. Daytime temperatures along the coast usually range between approximately 25 and 28°C. The sea retains the warmth of the summer months, with a long-term average temperature of around 24°C near Golem.

After the school holidays, there are fewer tourists, more space on the beach and more comfortable weather for day trips. Evenings can be cooler than in August, so it is useful to pack a light jumper or sweatshirt. A brief rain shower may occur, but most of your stay can still feel like summer.

September is ideal for couples, older travellers, families with young children and anyone who wants to extend the summer without the intense heat and crowds of the peak season.

Can you swim in Albania in May or October?

The Albanian coast often enjoys beautiful sunny days in May, although the sea is still cooler. Swimming therefore depends on the weather and your personal preferences. May is especially suitable for exploring towns, nature and historical sights.

At the beginning of October, the sea can still be pleasant, with the long-term average water temperature near Golem reaching around 21–22°C. However, the weather is less settled than in September and the chance of rain increases. For a holiday focused mainly on the beach, the period from June to September is therefore a more reliable choice.

Albania in winter: quiet beaches, rain and sunny days

You can also visit Albania during the winter months. The weather is changeable at this time of year – some days can be cold, windy or rainy, while others are pleasantly sunny and warm enough to spend time outdoors in just a sweatshirt. It does not rain every day, and clear winter days are perfect for long walks along almost empty beaches, day trips and exploring Albania without the summer crowds.

Evenings are usually cooler, so you should also bring a warmer jacket. We enjoy Albania in winter and regularly return to the apartment during this quieter time of year.

What should you pack for a holiday in Golem?

During the main season, you will mainly need lightweight clothing, swimwear, a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen with a high protection factor. For day trips, bring comfortable shoes and a bottle of water. If you are travelling in June or September, pack a light sweatshirt and a thin waterproof jacket for cooler evenings or an occasional rain shower.

Do not forget travel insurance. It is also a good idea to check the latest weather forecast before your departure, as actual conditions can sometimes differ from long-term averages.
